Chrono Trigger - Nintendo DS Version

Finished on: July 22nd, 2025

Hours Played: 17 hours, 51 minutes

Achievements: 42 / 101 (41.58%)

Favorite Achievement: The Guru is Gone

I NEVER KNEW ABOUT THIS ROOM

Hardest Achievement: Cowardly Golem

I used Marle, Robo and Ayla. Spammed Glacier Toss (Marle + Ayla double tech) and Robo used Rapid-fire Fist and gave out Hi-Ethers when needed. It was a VERY close call and I barely made it before it fled.

Rarest Achievement: Technical Wizard (6.54% Unlock Rate)

I was really surprised to see this as the rarest achievement I've unlocked so far. All the characters in my game had all their techs by the time I was about a third of the way through the Black Omen. The cheevo only counts single / double / triple techs learned naturally, not the ones where you had to equip a rock. In case you didn't know all of the triple techs that apply for this involve Crono.

Playthrough Notes

The amount of achievements I achieved seem very low even for me and that's because, like I mentioned above, I skipped the annoying Lost Sanctum quests and I haven't played through the New Game + content yet. Oh, and the Arena, I forgot about that. I'm kinda Chrono-ed out, haha, but the other added DS content that is unlocked after beating the game is very fun. Note to future self: play through the added dungeons before starting a new game!

Screenshots

About the screenshots: some of them seem... kinda off center because of the RetroArch DS layout I suppose. Sorry about that. I have no idea how to fix it beside cropping out major parts of those images.

THE GANG'S ALL HERE

A VERY SPECIAL "FUCK YOU" TO THE ONE OLD ASSHOLE THAT THOUGHT I WAS GUILTY AND LOCKED ME OUT OF ONE OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS!!!

my cat at 3 am

Antipode (or "Antipode Bomb", like was the rename really necessary???) is my favorite double tech in the game!

... okay.

This was the first time I beat Spekkio this early in the game!

I DID NOT KNOW that you could switch party members in and out whenever you want to in the DS version... I thought you had to be at a save point like almost every other JRPG.

oh no robo don't drink that!!! that's a red bull

I love the Nu monsters, they look so gormless and cute.

so cute!!!!!!

I LOVE the sprite of that enemy with his little hands on his hips. If I ever redo my favorite sprites page (which I should do) I gotta remember to add it.

lmao why are these two images so funny

There actually are 100 enemies in the dungeon! Well, 128 monsters but the other 28 seem skippable?

yet another great robo quote

UGH so I'm not really the kind of gamer that nitpicks at translations but did this line REALLY need to be changed?! "The black winds howl..." is such an iconic quote and he says it right as his music starts with the wind sound effects.

The fact that Lavos falls to the planet while spinning frantically makes me chuckle.

As I said above in the "favorite achievement" section I never knew about this hidden room in Enhasa! You don't get a huge reward for defeating them (I think it's two tabs / capsules but I'm not sure) but I've played through this game so many times that I was stunned to find out about this secret!

Every time one hits you your HP falls to 1 but it's not a difficult fight. Actually I don't even know if they can kill you...

me n my inner demons :))))

Like I said on my game review page I adore walking around the Kingdom of Zeal. I envy people who haven't played this game yet and have yet to explore the area for the first time. PLAY THIS GAME if you haven't already, it's a solid contender for the best JRPG of all time by a lot of gamers. You don't have to play the DS version, the extras aren't that exciting plus the SNES version is much easier to emulate.

It's always fun to take Crono's friends to meet his mom.

YOU KNOW WHAT'S NOT FUN THOUGH??? THIS BOSS FIGHT!!!! It's not difficult but it's sooo long. And I fucked up, didn't even know that this boss fight had a achievement. For some reason the notification that shows up on the bottom right side of your Retroarch screen when you're in a battle that had a cheevo that comes with it didn't show up.

GET BUBBLED BITCH

I honestly made an effort to beat this version of Lavos. I was thinking, "Oh, I might be able to survive this with Robo, a different armor on Crono and a HP increasing accessory on Marle..." then, uh, yeah.

This ALWAYS CONFUSED ME, why would the Earthbound people go OUTSIDE TO LOOK AT THE TIDAL WAVE???? They rushed back in when it came closer but what the hell, maybe it's just me that thinks that doesn't make any sense. Did they not believe the one guy that came in yelling about a tsunami once the Black Omen appeared?

... um. I fucked up again here. "YEAH AYLA CAN TAKE THE ENTIRE DUNGEON WITHOUT ARMOR AND ITEMS NO PROBLEM!!!" No, she can't, past version of me.

pull the trigger marle

This and the slippy slope are the worst parts of the game for me, bar none. For some reason the screen would occasionally flash and stay solid white during those parts and I wanted to scream. Thankfully I managed to bypass that eventually but holy shit, I thought I softlocked myself out of the rest of the game.

Thankfully the scenes at the end of the Mountain of Woe are amazing and worth the trouble. This part is sooo eerie with the eclipse and music...

... then Crono comes back and it's super heartwarming and touching. The story and script for this game is so well done.

Speaking of 'well done' I got my ass handed to me by Son of Sun as per usual before I re-equipped the Ruby Armor back on my party. Always happens. I also thought that I could damage the boss if I could handle the fire counterattacks but, uh, nope. This is a shot of the Frog / Robo / Ayla triple tech by the way, you have to equip a stone to use it but it does about 5k+ damage so sometimes I switch out the MP reducing accessory I have on Robo for it.

cat is murderer

OHHHH I ALWAYS FEEL SO BAD FOR ROBO DURING THIS QUEST, he worked so hard.

This is my favorite scene in the game, though! It's nice to see everyone together somewhere other than the End of Time.

If I HAD to pick a favorite character in the game it would be Robo. He's so adorable!

I wonder why Mother Brain chose stuffed toys to deactivate the lock leading to her room?

no magus lol

I REALLY TRIED to get the achievement during this fight, where you had to kill it before this attack, but I couldn't. I could have lowered Frog and Ayla's HP for Frog Squash and Dino Tail but *shrug* I never use those attacks. I was worried about the damage then I realized that I still had the Ruby Armor on all of them that I equipped for the Son of Sun fight.

I didn't capture it in the second screenshot but when he finds the letter Queen Lenne left for Marle he asks if he should burn it. I wish he had more lines for the end game quests.

she is the icon and she is the moment like come on now (or however that meme goes idfk)

... I probably could have beaten him with a bit more levelling but at this point I was ready to finish the game.

Didn't take a lot of shots of the Black Omen or the final battle for that matter but I didn't have any problems with either. Still a great experience though!

MEANWHILE

Hey, isn't this a really, REALLY bad idea?

;_;

yeah i'm sure none of their actions will have any consequences in the future :))))

So that's that! For now. Like I mentioned above I might come back to this playthrough to conquer the extra dungeons.
