Mortal Kombat 1 Story Mode Reaction

UNMARKED SPOILERS AHEAD!!

So I decided to jot down my thoughts as I watch the MK1 story mode on Youtube, kinda like a live reaction but... not. Eh, I dunno. Here's the video I watched. The story mode is a lot longer than the previous games!

I actually spoiled myself on the story before watching the story mode by my own choice. I know about the major plot points but not the minor ones. Also, I didn't watch the entire thing in one sitting.

Chapter One

I watched the first 15 minutes on IGN when that video came out.
Is that guy that called out Shang Tsung for his bullshit actually Baraka?
The watermark on the video is really fucking bothering me, might change to another one later.

Chapter Two

Ohhh, it's Johnny's chapter... anyone who ships him and Kenshi will be very happy with this story mode. :) (I'm not on the ship just yet, but they are a hot... ah, a cute couple.)
Hehe, I like Johnny's Indian Jones outfit. Yeah, this is definately a movie, as if Johnny knows about how the temple's fires are still burning. Or about liquid mercury. Johnny's too much a himbo to know, like, actual facts and stuff.
Judging by the chapter title, I guess Johnny is a A-list celebrity in this timeline. ... was he one in the previous timeline?
Haha, the director is named Steven. And Jimbo went from being a drag queen to making props? ... werk?

I learned the other day that Liu Kang is about 5 feet 8 inches in height but I think he's taller in this game. Unless Shao... shrunk?
Ah, Empress Sindel. :) SOOOO much better than the evil Empress from the previous games. I really liked the lawful-aligned Sindel of the pre-NRS eras so it's good to have that back.

FORGOT TO MENTION THIS, but I'm happy that there's no new characters and that older veterans are getting a chance to shine in this Mortal Kombat game. The series has such a HUGE ROSTER that it should've been the norm for the previous two games as well.
Oh, are Princess Kitana and Johnny going to end up together? Girl don't, he films videos on his phone the wrong way! (I actually like CageBlade but if they do hook up then whatever.)

*bangs on pots and pans* MORE TALEENA, MORE TALEENA, thank god at least ONE of my ships survived to another game. Ships that have not made it so far: Stryker x Kabal, Kuai Liang x Hanzo, Fujin x Nightwolf, and to a much lesser extent Erron x Jin and Johnny x Sonya (Cageblade, as I mentioned before).
Is Liu Kang eating? Does he need to eat? I'm going back and forth between the video and Visual Studio Code (the program I use to construct webpages) so I'm not catching everything.

FINALLY, A KENSHI CHAPTER! He deserved one in MKX too. Man, Raiden had quite a long chapter, huh?
Johnny's outfit... kinda looks weird on him? It's like a power ranger's suit without the helmet, I guess.
I like how Liu Kang specifically said that this is supposed to be a "quiet" mission, yet the next scene begins with Johnny complaning.

I, uh, read how bad Megan Fox's voice acting is but haven't really heard it outside of Nitara's reveal trailer. We suffered through two god awful voices in MK11 (Sonya's default and that one Sub-Zero skin) so it can't be that bad, right?
oh it's bad, like ALMOST as bad OOOOF, poor Nitara deserves much better. It's not ear-grating like those two voices were but it just sounds like she's reading directly off of a script.

Chapter Six

Nitara: *deadpan, in a valley girl accent* "Quan Chi!"
I don't like Havik's new haircut, his long tangled hair was much better. Actually, I don't like Havik's design that much, you can do SO MUCH with his appearance with that decaying face and his chaotic behavior... but then NRS just gives us a boring default design. Bah.
Similar to Sonya's voice in MK11, Nitara's bad voice acting is especially bad since every single other character has amazing VAs voicing them.
............... so Johnny coined the term "soulnado" this time around, huh........ i would say that he's a cunning linguist but he's into Kenshi way too much this time around to be one...

Time for Reptile's chapter! Him stalking General Shao on the rooftops made me giggle hard for some reason. He was so wobbly on the top of that one building.

Oh, by the way! If you like SubSmoke, you'll enjoy this story mode and Smoke's ending! (When I learned about what happens during Smoke's ending, I wanted to punch a hole through my computer screen. All I'm going to say is that there's a reason why "SubScorp" is now "Kuai Liang x Hanzo"...)
Everybody in the "mortal kombat" tag on Tumblr has a fucking hard-on for Bi-Han in the worst way. It's really annoying. I like the guy too, and he's certainly easy on the eyes, but wishing that a jerkass like him will suddenly become NOT a jerkass and throwing temper tantrums about it is very fucking irratating to read. (When has Bi-Han EVER been a lawful character? Mythologies? But that was because he was following orders, not because he wanted to.) That would require a complete 180 degree character change, similar to Sindel in MK11 and we ALL JUST LOVED THAT CHANGE RIGHT /s

Yeah, I'm definately not finishing this all in one go. I'm at 2 hours and 5 minutes and the individual character endings start around 3 hours and 36 minutes in. And that's with the fighting gameplay cut out! It's great that the story mode has more meat to it this time around. (hahah "meat", wonder if he'll be a kameo dlc like the rumors say?) Mortal Kombat's story really shines when it focuses on character development and how they interact with each other, in my opinion.
Kuai Liang getting buried by falling koins was pretty fucking ridiculous and funny. No, I don't think I'll start calling him Scorpion any time soon. I've been a fan of this series too fucking long to do that.
... hey, did Liu Kang ever think to mention it to Bi-Han, the hot-headed grump who only thinks of himself, to not listen to Shang Tsung's lies like he did to his other warriors?

Chapter Nine

Oh, it's... Kuai Liang's chapter now.
... where did Smoke go? I guess he was like, "Bi-Han told me to stay here to watch that spot AND NOTHING ELSE SOOOOOOO"
I just googled "how many chapters are in mk1's story mode" (15!) and found out that the Test Your Might segments are skippable, hooray!
Forgot to mention, Sareena did NOT have another line. I was right. *shrug*
I don't think that Bi-Han will ever be a "good guy" in the main storyline. Other realms? Sure, why not. But when I heard that the tagline for this game was, "It's in Our Blood" my first thought was about how some characters' motives just won't change for the better, no matter what Liu Kang does to change their origins. He's a great villain, however, one of my favorite bad guys in the series.

I think another reason why I won't refer to him as Scorpion is because after the first fight of his chapter is the FIRST TIME WE SEE HIM USE HIS FIRE POWERS.

Speaking of drag, I wonder why so many drag queens/kings are fans of Mortal Kombat? Well, it's probably because they have good taste. This series has always had the best looking characters and nothing will convince me otherwise. NOTHING.
Oh, hey, Havik and Darrius are here. Let me guess, Darrius won't get another line either? ... he didn't. Why the fuck would you have kameos show up in the story mode and give them ONE LINE EACH?

Chapter Ten

Finally, Li Mei's chapter! She's really getting the short end of the stick in the story mode so far.
The scene where Liu Kang and her speak outside the portal is very pretty and... aesthetically pleasing? With all that purple glitter behind them.
Li Mei ABSOLUTELY should've been a DLC fighter in MKX, along with Fujin.
... you know what? Where the FUCK is Jade? I know she's not in this game, and EVERYONE ON TWITTER IS HAVING A RIOT ABOUT IT, but you would think she would've been mentioned at least once in the story. Come on, what's she up to now? She's my favorite female character in the series, man. :(
I really like Li Mei's fighting style, she looks like a blast to play. I don't plan on purchasing this game until all the DLC comes out, which... will be a while. And I'm not buying it at full price, I'm waiting until it's all out and on sale on Steam.
Aw, that little Tanya and Mileena scene was cute.

Chapter Eleven

Oh, okay, wow, Li Mei definately had the shortest chapter so far!
Alright, so Liu Kang is NOT an Elder God anymore but a demi-god like original Raiden and Fujin. Hmm. Oh, that's right, he was a Titan. Bah, I can't keep up.
Ah, a sepia toned flashback. where is fujin And I remember this background music from that excellent Raiden vs. Liu Kang scene in the previous game.

Hey, I'm back! ... something I realized while working is that it's VERY NICE not to have the Special Forces and the Black Dragon around for the story.
Ohhhh, the random zoom in shots on Sindel's face are to bypass any gore in the background.

Chapter Twelve

I don't like how SHORT the chapters are compared to now. Not a good sign. FINALLY Mileena gets her own chapter!
HOLY SHIT MILEENA, was using a gigantic fucking crossbow to take out one mook necessary?
"We should split up." ... and then they don't talk about who's going with who? See, it's the little details that make me think that I'm not going to like the ending. The writing's getting... off.
"This time, I protect you." I love that the Taleena ship is getting more attention! SHE CALLED HER "DEAREST TANYA"!!
I'm glad that Jerrod got least... crusty when it was his time to show up.
Yet again, it's nice to see a "bad guy" like Ermac on the side of the heroes.
I missed Jerrod and Kitana reuniting in the background, haha. I was thinking UH HELLO YOU HAVE ANOTHER DAUGHTER DUDE

... yup, it's laziness. The dark doubles don't even have lines. Well, Dark Shao has lines. And Dark Reiko has one!
Shang Tsung's weapons are quite nifty.

Chapter Fourteen

Wow, that chapter was even shorter than Li Mei's. SIIIIGH. Classic NRS writing.
Yay, it's the reunion between Liu Kang and his Kitana! :) It's very cute. I watched this scene beforehand, too.

Let me take a wild guess!! I bet these "dark doubles" don't have lines either! Oh, Dark Tanya has one but it's literally a variation of Raiden's "I WILL RIP THE FLESH FROM YOUR BONES!" line from MK9. And Dark Liu Kang has some. I think it was Dark Kitana who responded to Shang Tsung but I'm too uninterested to check.

Chapter Fifteen

Female Johnny! ... if you look very closely at the "Select Your FINAL WARRIOR" screen, apperantly all the characters in the back look like odd Quan Chi clones.

Fuck it, I'm choosing either Li Mei or Ashrah for completing the story mode. They needed more time to shine.
The more the story continued, the messier it got. It seems like the quality of the writing went downhill once Baraka left the heroes' team and the chapters got MUCH shorter. It's a bad sign when you can pinpoint the moment the story went downhill. Hopefully there's a DLC continuation of the story like Aftermath and if there will be, I hope the writers take their time to make the story as fleshed out as the beginning of this story mode was.
It seems like I'm not the only one disappointed by the rushed latter half of the story, judging by the comments on /r/MortalKombat, Twitter and Tumblr. As soon as the major leak came out early this year that MK1 would be coming in September, I had a gut feeling that the story would be rushed. Sadly, I was right. The first half was really good, though! But after Reptile's chapter, the plot went so fast and a lot of characters and plot points just disappeared. What a shame.
But on a whole, this was a very solid story compared to MK11's story mode, which was all over the fucking place IMHO. I would give it a 7/10 overall. The first half was excellent and easily the best story since MK9 for me but the other half was so fucking rushed and sloppy.
The worst part about the ending was how all those timelines and titans came together AND THEN NEVERMIND THEY ALL DIED. What?!?! I hate time travel/multiverse plot lines in video games, it's so easy to mess up. IMHO the only games that come to mind when it comes to getting time manipulation correct are Chrono Trigger (NOT Chrono Cross) and Majora's Mask.
No Stryker. :( At least MK11 had a bunch of my favorites ACTUALLY SHOW UP during the story, even before Aftermath came out.
I'm still fucking jealous about the amount of canon content you Johnny x Kenshi shippers have!!! At least Taleena survived, to some extent.
I'm happy that Raiden's chapter happened during the non-rushed part of the story. I still prefer old Raiden (LMAO I GUESS THAT'S ONE TERM TO DESCRIBE HIM) but I'm not as apprehensive about new Raiden now that I've seen the story mode.
Uhh, what else? I guess that's about it. Oh, I don't know if it's "Bi-Han" or "Bi Han", if it's the latter I'll definately change it but I'm going with my gut and keeping the dash in between the names.

Alright, I guess that's about it. If you actually read this nonsense, thank you! Despite my critiques of the story mode, I've been hearing nothing but great things about the actual gameplay and I do plan on playing it in the future. I mean, once all the DLC comes out, of course. I might tidy up this page in the future but I doubt it. It was a lot of fun to compile all my thoughts like this, however, so maybe I'll make another "live reaction" page like this in the future!
